Radiant Barrier reflects heat, unlike mass insulation which only slows down or resists heat transfer. Heat always
transfers to cold by natural law - the challenge is how to retain the heat during the winter and keep it out in the summer.
IN THE WINTER
Just like wrapping a baked potato in aluminum foil keeps
a potato warm longer by holding the heat in, covering your attic insulation with Radiant Barrier holds the heat in the house.
Another analogy would be that Radiant Barrier works just like a space blanket in the winter, though very thin and lightweight,
holds your body heat in. A thin space blanket can keep you warmer than several heavy blankets. Your utility bill
will decrease as energy prices to continue to increase.
IN THE SUMMER
Just like a space suit, Radiant Barrier reflects the suns heat before it can warm up the insulation in your attic. When
insulation stays cooler, your house will stay cooler. If your air conditioner could talk, it would be thanking you during
the hot summer months for the time off you are giving it. The amount of energy savings are very noticeable.
IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RADIANT BARRIER AND RADIANT PAINT OR COATING?
Yes, there is a big difference
between the two. In order to carry the name 'Radiant Barrier' the material must block out at least 90% of radiant
heat and have an emittance of 3%, determined by the EPA. For Radiant Coatings the standard is that it must block out only 70% of radiant heat. At best you will find certain coatings that can block
out 76%, these numbers are also determined by the EPA. Although these are still good numbers, they are still inferior to sheet Radiant
Barrier. Installation tends to be a bit more expensive as well. Radiant Coatings are simply not as effective
or efficient as Radiant Barrier.
